Your first conversation with AI
If you've never talked to an AI tool before, here's the good news: you already know how to do it. You just don't know it yet.
Step 1: Pick a tool
Open ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini in your web browser — no app to download, no account headaches. Free is fine to start. Just go to the website and look for a box where you can type.
Step 2: Forget everything Google taught you
Here's the one rule that changes everything: talk to it like a person, not a search engine. Google trained all of us to type keywords: "best restaurants LA." AI works completely differently — it wants full sentences and real context, the way you'd explain something to a friend.
Instead of "restaurants LA," try:
That's it. That's the whole shift.
Step 3: Three safe questions to try
You don't need the "perfect" question. Anything works. But if you want an easy win right out of the gate, try one of these:
- "Explain [something you're curious about] like I'm brand new to this."
- "Help me write an email to corporate about getting sent the wrong package or billed wrongfully without sounding too upset."
- "I have chicken, rice, and broccoli — what can I make for dinner tonight?"
Step 4: It's a conversation, not a vending machine
This is the part most people miss. You can talk back.
- Answer too long? Say "shorter."
- Too technical? Say "explain it simpler."
- Not quite what you meant? Say "no, I meant something else," then go on and provide as much context to tailor your request.
You're not stuck with the first response. You're allowed to push back, ask again, or steer it — just like talking to a person.
Step 5: What you don't need to worry about
- You can't "break" it by asking the wrong question.
- There's no such thing as a dumb question here.
- It won't get impatient, judge you, or roll its eyes.
